Frequently Asked Questions

  • Most hospital stays are just a few days—enough to stabilize a condition before discharging home or to a rehab center. But some patients need more time and more specialized care. That’s where Cornerstone comes in.

We’re a physician-led hospital that treats people with serious, often multiple health issues—like respiratory failure, infections, or complex wounds. We provide hospital-level care for as long as it’s needed, helping patients regain strength and independence so they can move forward in their recovery.

  • Yes. Early rehabilitation is a key part of our care. Our physical, occupational, and speech therapists begin working with patients—sometimes even those on ventilators—as soon as it’s safe.

Therapy is tailored to each individual’s ability and energy level. There’s no required minimum to participate; it’s all about what’s right for you, right now. We call this approach Move Early, because even small steps can lead to big progress.

  • We want the transition to be smooth and supportive. One of our clinical liaisons will work closely with your care coordinator to review your condition and medical history. Once we determine that Cornerstone is the right fit, we’ll coordinate with your family and care team to schedule your admission.

  • Traditional hospitals are designed for short stays and emergency stabilization. If your condition is medically complex—or if you’re not quite ready to transition to rehab or home care—you may benefit from the extended, physician-led care we offer at Cornerstone.

We provide the kind of daily attention, specialty services, and time that traditional hospitals just aren’t built for.

  • While a typical hospital stay is four to five days, the average stay at Cornerstone is about 25 days. That can vary based on your diagnosis, response to treatment, and personal recovery goals. Our job is to make sure you have the time, care, and support needed to heal.

  • Unlike skilled nursing or rehab centers, Cornerstone is a licensed acute care hospital. That means your care is led by physicians who see you daily and coordinate closely with specialists in internal medicine, pulmonology, and critical care.
We offer on-site services like radiology, lab testing, and pharmacy—services most other facilities don’t have.

Our therapy is also different. It begins while you’re still receiving medical treatment. It’s designed around your condition and goals—not a preset schedule—so there’s no pressure to meet minimums or benchmarks. Just steady, thoughtful progress.

  • Patients come to Cornerstone when they need continued hospital-level care after a medical crisis or surgery. Many have:

    • Ventilator dependence or trouble breathing

    • Complex infections, wounds, or post-surgical complications

    • Heart, lung, or kidney failure (including those needing dialysis)

    • Stroke, neurological issues, or multiple chronic conditions

    • Significant loss of mobility or independence

If your condition is too complex for a rehab center—but you’re ready to move forward—we may be the right next step.

  • We accept most insurance plans, and part of our admissions process includes verifying your benefits. While we encourage families to check coverage directly, our team is here to help answer questions and provide referrals if needed.

  • We welcome your doctor to continue your care, if they have attending privileges at our hospital. If not, we’ll match you with one of our trusted Cornerstone physicians. We’ll also share updates with your doctor—so you can feel confident that your care is continuous and well-coordinated.

  • We help you plan the next step in your recovery, whether that’s going home or continuing care elsewhere. Discharge options may include:

    • Acute inpatient rehabilitation

    • Skilled nursing or subacute care

    • Assisted living

    • Home health services

    • Outpatient rehabilitation

Wherever you go next, we’ll help you get there—with a clear plan, compassionate support, and confidence in the progress you’ve made.
